Leanne Fiftal Alarid

Leanne Fiftal Alarid is Professor and Chair of the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Texas at El Paso. She double majored in Psychology and Sociology with a B.A. from the University of Northern Colorado. She worked in Denver as a counselor in a girls group home and then as a case manager at an adult halfway house before returning to school to earn an M.A. and Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University. She was on the faculty at the University of Missouri–Kansas City from 1996–2006, and at the University of Texas at San Antonio from 2006–2013. Her research areas are post-conviction offender behavior, mental illness and justice-involved offenders, and correctional policy. She has also partnered with a number of criminal justice agencies as a researcher, consultant, and program evaluator. Dr. Alarid has authored more than 60 journal articles and book chapters, and authored or edited eight books. She received the Fellow Award by the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences in 2011 for outstanding contributions to criminal justice education and service.

Nine new themed boxes, "Evidence-Based Practices in Community Corrections," spotlight approaches and techniques that work in community-based corrections. Topics include youth diversion (Ch. 4); "responsivity" through gender-specific programming, cognitive behavioral therapy (Ch. 5); how officers can reinforce positive behavior of offenders (Ch. 6); effectiveness of swift and certain sanctions for probationers who evade drug testing (Ch. 7); how parole officers can motivate former prisoners to change (Ch. 11); and impediments and challenges to evidence-based practices (Ch. 14).
Chapter 5, "Case Management Using Risk/Needs/Responsivity," is newly titled to reflect the incorporation of evidence-based research and practices. The chapter also has increased coverage on emergent practices in case planning, strategies, and an expanded section on working with women offenders. The questionnaire at the end of the chapter has been revised to include pertinent information for the Ohio Risk Assessment System.
Thoroughly updated, the eleventh edition includes discussion of a new approach to community supervision called "criminogenic needs-based supervision" (Ch. 2, 5, 12); recent findings related to drug courts and other problem-solving courts (Ch. 4); current community supervision techniques for drug offenders, sex offenders, and offenders with mental health issues (Ch. 6); the most recent revocation and recidivism rates (Ch. 7); and updates on conferencing, reparation boards, and victim impact panels as they relate to restorative justice (Ch. 10).
Chapter 13 contains a new section on home visits and curfews as a practical approach in opportunity-focused supervision for working with juveniles on probation and their families.
More than half of the chapter-opening stories present new topics. These include Justin Beiber's delinquent escapades and brushes with the law (Ch. 1); former defense attorney Lynne Stewart, who received compassionate release from prison (Ch. 3); Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius, who was found culpable in the death of his girlfriend (Ch. 4); Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, who is on probation for his second DUI (Ch. 5); celebrity bike builder Billy Lane's post-release supervision (Ch. 11); and actor Mark Wahlberg, who hopes to obtain a pardon for violent behaviors committed as a juvenile (Ch. 14).

A decision-making theme gives students opportunities to engage in kinesthetic learning and apply what they learn to real-world scenarios via case studies at the end of every chapter. These exercises can be used in class discussions or as a basis for writing assignments. Topics include writing a pre-sentence Investigation Report based on case information and/or a sample PSI (Ch. 4); interviewing protocol for clients (Ch. 5); assessing risk and needs using objective tools (Ch. 5); developing a client's treatment program plan (Ch. 5); and decision making while supervising a probationer (Ch. 7).
